What's In A Lip Balm?

What's in a lip balm? I like to ask myself what do I want in a lip balm? Think about it. If it goes on your lips, it's going in your mouth and into your stomach! Many of the ingredients I have to look up. I draw the line when something that goes on your lips and you know is going into your stomach has warnings to notify Poison Control if ingested.

Lulu's Thin Mint Lip Balm has Olive Oil, Cocoa Butter, Beeswax, Coconut Oil, Calendula Oil, Vitamin E oil, Peppermint Oil, and Jojoba Oil. That's it! Let's break down the ingredients:

  1. Olive Oil: No problem going into your stomach right? It's also commonly used in skin care products as a moisturizer. Olive oil will also give your lips a gloss.

  2. Cocoa Butter: Used for dry, chapped lips as a moisturizer.

  3. Beeswax: Used as a base for lip balms and emollient for balms.

  4. Coconut Oil: Used to moisturize your lips.

  5. Calendula Oil: (Calendula officinalis) From the family of Asteraceae (marigolds). Thought to have healing qualities on skin, herbalists often use for inflammation, cuts, and wounds.

  6. Vitamin E Oil: Do I need to say anything? Used to help with dry, cracked lips.

  7. Peppermint Oil: Often used for the scent and to energize. Often used to "plump" your lips. It's thought to increase circulation to the area. I haven't been able to find any real studies to prove it but personally it does feel great on my lips. As you can see it's is low on the list. Too much can irritate your lips.

  8. Jojoba Oil: Thought to help your lips from dehydrating and soften your lips.

That's all that's in it. I am a fan of minimal ingredients that get the job done. Have you looked at a lot of commercial lip balm? All those ingredients are overwhelming. I like to keep it simple for me.

If you are sensitive to peppermint oil, even though there isn't a lot you may want to try Lulu's Cocoa Butter Lip Balm. All the same great quality certified organic ingredients without peppermint oil.

Here's what I know from years of using lip balms. Look at the ingredients. People can be sensitive or allergic to just about anything. What you see in our ingredients is all you get. All of us at Lulu's use these products and we are very picky about what we want.

Sometimes less is better if it gets the job done! You will have to apply them often. You eat, you drink, you lick your lips, etc. Don't use more than you need to. Apply some to your bottom lip and go ahead and smack your lips together. Your skin and lips only absorb so much. I think anything more is a waste of money.

Lulu loves to make custom products. We are a small family business.
