Nutrients/Active Ingredients: Alfalfa is used as a source of vitamins A, C, K, thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), folate (B9), pantothenic acid (B5), calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, phosphorous, and iron. It is thought to contain chlorophyll, saponins, coumarins, flavonoids, phytosterols, phytoestrogens and alkaloids.
Parts Used: Leaves and flowers
Common preparation: Most often taken as a tea, extract, added to smoothies or liquids. Leaves, seeds, and sprouts are most commonly used. Tastes nutty slightly similar to pea.
Side Effects/Precautions/Interactions: Not recommended during pregnancy, for children, people using blood thinners, compromised immune systems, or anyone with an autoimmune disorders. Large doses can increase your sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity). Alfalfa may decrease your blood sugar. Alfalfa might lower the body's absorption of dietary iron and how your body uses vitamin E.
