Properties: Classified as an Alterative, antibacterial, Bitter, Blood purifier, diaphoretic, Emmenagogue (stimulates menstrual flow), and Galactagogue (increases flow of milk with lactation).  

Nutrients/Active Ingredients:  Tannins, calcium, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sodium, Vitamins A, B complex, C, and zinc.  

Uses by system and symptom:

  • Cardiovascular:  Used to improved circulation, blood impurities, and angina.
  • Digestive/Gastrointestinal:  Used for indigestion, anorexia (loss of appetite), diarrhea, liver and gallbladder problems. 
  • Integumentary/Skin: Used for boils, ulcers, and wounds. 
  • Respiratory:  Use to treat symptoms of colds and coughs.
  • Urinary:  Used as a diuretic to increase urine output.
  • Nervous: Used for headaches and to improve memory.
  • Immune:  Used for bacterial infections, fever, and cancer. 
  • Male/Female Reproductive: Used to improve the flow of breast milk and for menopause symptoms.

Parts used:  The entire herb.

Common doses and preparation:  Taken as a tea, tincture, used as a general tonic and digestive aid.  Blessed thistle is often added to alcoholic beverages as a bitter.  You can pair it with ginger root or lemongrass.  You can make something called a fomentation to apply to your skin for acne or boils.  A fomentation is simply using moist heat for pain topically.
