Uses by system and symptom:

  • Cardiovascular:  Taken as a blood tonic, purifier, and cleanser. Used for hypertension, reduce cholesterol, and triglycerides.  Has been used as a blood tonic.
  • Digestive/Gastrointestinal:  Constipation as an antispasmodic
  • Endocrine:  May lower your blood sugar
  • Integumentary/Skin:
  • Skeletal: joint pain, arthritis, and osteoporosis.
  • Nervous: Used as a nervine for stress, nervousness, and for insomnia.
  • Immune:  Thought to have antihistamine and anti-inflammatory qualities.
  • Male/Female Reproductive: Used for menstrual cramps and PMS
  • Other:  Used as an analgesic.

Common doses and preparation:  You can take in capsule form, tea, tincture or decoction.  It has a bitter taste line Anise. Common doses 1-2 tablespoon (about 5-10 grams) in a decoction of about 2 cups.  Tincture is often 1-2 ml twice a day.  Has been used to flavor liqueurs and confections (sweet dishes).

Side Effects/Precautions/Interactions: May cause your skin to be more sensitive to the sun.  Contains coumarin (blood thinning). Not recommended for pregnancy, uterine fibroids, or if you are taking blood thinners.
