Nutrients/Active Ingredients: Vitamin A, C, vitamin B complexes, E, F, calcium, copper, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, iron, zinc, and sodium.  Contains an alkaloid and berberines.  Alkaloids are thought to have antimicrobial qualities.  Berberines are thought to support you endocrine and cardiovascular system. 

Uses by system and symptom: 

  • Cardiovascular: Used for high cholesterol and lipids ( hypocholesteremia and hyperlipidemia), and high blood pressure.
  • Digestive/Gastrointestinal: Mucous membranes infections in digestive system.  Can be used in mouthwashes for sore mouth and gums.  As a bitter often used for liver, gallbladder, and digestive problems.  Has been used as a liver detoxification herb.
  • Endocrine:  Has been used to decreased blood sugar.
  • Integumentary/Skin:  Mucous membranes infections in/on skin.  Used for eczema, psoriasis, skin infections, abscesses, and wounds.
  • Respiratory:  Bronchial congestions related to Mucous membranes infections.
  • Urinary: has been used to treat urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Immune: Often used with echinacea to fight colds/flus/ and infections by treating mucous membranes.  Has been used to try to prevent cancer.
  • Male/Female Reproductive: Mucous membranes infections
  • Other: Has been used as an insect repellant. 

Common doses and preparation: Tea, tincture, salve, douche.  Not recommended to use over 3-4 weeks.  

Side Effects/Precautions/Interactions:  Not recommended for children or pregnancy.  May lower blood sugar and blood pressure.
