Nutrients/Active Ingredients:   May stimulate the adrenal gland which, produces adrenaline and the steroids aldosterone and cortisol. They are found above the kidneys.  Contains vitamin E, phosphorus, B vitamins, biotin, niacin, pantothenic acid, lecithin, manganese, iodine, chromium, and zinc. Contains flavonoids and saponins.

  • Digestive/Gastrointestinal:  Thought to act as a laxative, help with inflammation of the GI tract, ulcers, heartburn and acid reflux.  Also has been used as a mouth rinse for bad breath.
  • Endocrine:  Has been used to try to lose weight. 
  • Integumentary/Skin:  Age spots, eczema, skin rashes, cellulitis, and folliculitis  
  • Respiratory:   Coughs, colds, sore throat.  Astringent qualities are thought to loosen congestion in your chest and used as an expectorant. Used for chronic bronchitis like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Immune:  Used to boost immune system, as an antiviral antibacterial, and antioxidant. Used to reduce swelling, fever, and cause sweating. 
  • Male/Female Reproductive:  Hot flashes

Common doses and preparation:  Tastes bitter and sweet like anise and fennel.  Used as  chewable tablets, capsules, extracts, teas, lozenges, tinctures, and powders.  are available in most health food stores.  People have used anywhere from  5 to 15 grams a day and are thought to be safe for short-term use(1)

Side Effects/Precautions/Interactions:  Not recommended for long term use, pregnant or breast feeding women, heart/liver/kidney problems.  Recommended to stop taking licorice two weeks before surgery.  Large doses can decrease your potassium level and cause high blood pressure.
