Nutrients/Active Ingredients:  Contains thujone, which is a monoterpene ketone thought to have antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-protozoa qualities.

Uses by system and symptom:

  • Digestive/Gastrointestinal: Bitter used for to gall bladder problems, intestinal spasms, stimulate appetite, indigestion, heartburn, nausea, gas, and abdominal pain.
  • Nervous: Used for anxiety and stress. 
  • Immune: Thought to have antimicrobial and antifungal properties.
  • Other: Used as a mosquito and flea repellant.

Common doses and preparation:  Taken as an extract or tea. Often used as a bitter used to flavor alcohol beverages. Found in cosmetics, cleaning products, and food flavoring. Infused tea or oil has been used for salmonella, E coli, and external fungal infections. 

Side Effects/Precautions/Interactions:  Not recommended longer than four weeks at a time.
